Establish credit and use it responsibly

Back in the day when some of us were 18 and off to college, we had no problem applying for and actually getting a credit card. We didn’t have jobs but got the card anyway…and used it. LOL? – No, not funny. For years, college kids racked up credit card debt that they couldn’t afford but now, the rules have changed.

Having a credit card is NOT a bad thing at all – it helps to establish credit' which makes it easier to get financing later in life for big ticket items like a car or a home, but you need to use it responsibly. The new rules are if you are 21 or older, you have to have the income necessary to support the line of credit to get it on your own. If you are ages 18-21, you can get a credit card BUT you have to have a co-signer who is 21 or older, again with the necessary income to support the credit.
